ZebWhat is a hero? Is it a guy who dresses up in a tight spandex suit who battles evil-doers?  Is it a man distinguished by exceptional courage and strength?  Is it a Greek demi-god?

The word hero has become overused so much so that it has lost it’s meaning entirely.  We want to help bring the word to it’s true fruition, it’s true meaning, it’s true purpose.  The word, “hero” should only be used for a select few, the chosen ones, the righteous.

Therefore, we have reserved this sacred word for those that mean the most to us, “YOU.”  Forever and always, YOU will be our heroes, for YOU help to motivate us, encourage us and inspire us.  YOU are the true heroes.

Be prepared for future installments in our blog where we profile one of our readers and share their experiences to The Running Brother world, which in case YOU haven’t noticed, YOU are now a part of.

ZebI know, I know.  It’s January 7, how can I possibly be writing about my New Year’s Resolution.  I’m a chronic procrastinator.

Hence, you might assume that my New Year’s Resolution would be to stop procrastinating.  You are wrong.  It’s a bunch of other things and here they are in no particular order.

  • Increase my running distance every week, until I am able to run 26 miles without stopping.
  • Increase my biking distance every week, until I am able to bike 112 miles without stopping.
  • Increase my swimming distance every week, until I am able to swim 2.4 miles without stopping.
  • To not drink any alcohol in 2011.

These goals are all measurable.  Every Wednesday I plan on updating my process and every Wednesday for the entire year, I plan to improve my weekly distance for running, biking and swimming for 52 weeks out of the year.  Check on my progress and hold me accountable.  Most people don’t keep their New Year’s Resolution’s, do you think I am most people?  Let’s see how long I can last.

I already posted my distances for the first week of the year, this past Wednesday, so if I am to keep my promise, I will need to swim more than 2.5 miles this week and run more than 9.8 miles.

ZebI don’t want to flood my posts with my exercise routine; however, I do think it’s important to update everyone on the progress I’m making, so every Wednesday I will post the amount of exercise I have done for the week and my total amount.

Total Amount:

Running = 9.8 miles (27.5 miles to downtown L.A.)

Swimming = 4100 meters or 2.5 miles (34.8 miles to downtown L.A.)

Total = 12.3 miles (25 miles to downtown L.A.)

ZebOne of the reasons I started training for the Iron Man was to give me something to do other than drink.  I realized that alcohol had caused me numerous problems and decided to end my use of it entirely.

It has not been easy.  I had tried quitting numerous times before, which I did, but never for good.  I would quit for a month or two, but I made the commitment to stop entirely and have done so.  Over the holidays, it has become even more difficult as constant get togethers with old friends brings me in to situations that encourage drinking.  During these social occasions drinking is almost always involved.  It is difficult to find people to do activities with that do not involve drinking.   I decided to make the commitment to become an Iron Man and hope to meet friends along the way.

My brother is my best friend and it is great that he and I can do this together, but I want to help establish a community of people where health is what we put our focus around and not alcohol.  So, if any of you are up for it, feel free to contact and join us in improving our health and making friends along the way.

This picture was taken in downtown San Luis Obispo.

After turning 21, I spent a lot of time inside of bars,  and San Luis Obispo has an amazing bar scene.  But, on Saturday night instead of stopping in for drinks, I decided to run past the bars instead.

Watching the young people, dressed up and ready for a night of drinking, I realized how much my life has changed.  Running past those bars on a rainy night in downtown San Luis Obispo symbolized a defining moment in my life.  Instead of stopping in for a drink and passing time, I turned my focus towards accomplishment and achievement, to setting goals and completing them.  I turned my back on my past, the life that I had known and headed toward the future I desire, the future I deserve.

ZebIt was New Year’s Day and my resolution was to begin my training for the Ironman.  I procrastinated.  At 11:30 PM, I put on my swim trunks and headed for the gym.  Just before midnight, I dipped my toes into the pool.

I wanted to see how long I could swim before my body gave out.  The longest I have ever swam was when I did a sprint triathalon almost a year ago where I swam 100 meters.  How long could I last?  No stopping, just all out swimming, could I do the 2.4 miles?  Could I do it under 2 hours and 20 minutes?

The pool was freezing, I snapped my swimming goggles into place and began.  At the beginning, the hardest part for me was counting.  One, two, three . . . (wait, did I just finish three or start three), I messed up counting already.   The swimming part was easy, up until lap 27.  When my goggles opened up and water began seeping in.  Ahh, the annoyance of chlorine filled water seeping into my eyes, I had to take a quick stop to fix the problem.

In the end, my mind was the hardest thing to overcome.  I kept telling myself that it was ok to stop short, people would understand, I had never done this before.  Any number would be great, but I needed to know how long I could last so I prodded on, lap after lap after lap.  My mind continued to whisper to me, “Give Up.”

On lap 55 my arms began to get heavy and my stroke was not fluid anymore, I kept slapping at the water like a seal who pounds it’s fin on the water’s surface.  I had lost all sense of grace.  On lap 60, my mind won, I knew I could not reach the 78 laps needed to complete 2.4 miles, my first training swim came to an end.

I swam 3,000 meters or 1.86411 miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes, well above the pace required to complete the swimming portion of the Ironman race.  Not to shabby considering my longest swim prior to this was 100 meters.

ZebThe time for taking things slowly has ended.  This running brother is officially beginning his training today.  And will continue for all of 2011.  This commitment to complete an Ironman has become daunting, but I’m up for it.

The last two weeks have been extremely hectic and I have found little time and motivation to begin training regularly due to all the friends and family events scheduled around the holidays.  My brother and I did; however, get in a little run and photoshoot on Christmas Day and the pictures from that are instant classics.

I can’t wait to see what the New Year brings for The Running Brothers and I can’t wait to hear from all of you.  If you’re ever interested in going for a run, or a bike ride feel free to let me know.  Have a great 2011.

ZebOne of our stops along the run was the San Luis Obispo Mission.  The mission was founded in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra, located at the center of downtown San Luis Obispo.  http://www.missionsanluisobispo.org/

One of it’s most interesting features is the Child & Bear Fountain that appears in the front of the mission.  The fountain has several bears appearing to play in a pond, next to a girl who is wading her feet in the water.  The fountain was installed in 1988.  http://www.ci.san-luis-obispo.ca.us/specialactivities/archives/pubartphotoinfo/tequski.htm

As a kid, I used to always visit the mission and hang out there with my mother.  I especially remember playing with my little brother and sister in the creek which runs alongside the mission.  After soaking ourselves in the 2 foot deep creek, we would go have yogurt at the local mall.  The Mission at San Luis Obispo is definitely a great place to build memories for you and your family.

ZebI had to make a personal stop on our run around San Luis Obispo.  My Grandmother who passed away about 1o years ago spent almost her entire adult life in San Luis Obispo.

Her husband, William or Chris Hoover, helped to found the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport in April, 1939.  http://sloairport.com/airport_history.html  My Grandfather passed away when my mother was a young girl in a plane accident.  My Grandmother remained in San Luis Obispo after his passing and lived right next to the downtown area.

To me, her house was unique and warm.  Grandma Hoover’s house was what I looked forward to visiting every summer.  She was the kindest, sweetest grandma anyone could ask for.  So, on this trip I wanted to stop by her house to remember my Grandmother and all her warmth, considering that by this time I was soaking wet.

One thing I will never forget was the way my Grandma said goodbye every summer when we headed back home.  She would stand on her porch and wave until we were completely out of site.  I imagine my Grandmother like this even today, waving goodbye from her little green house in San Luis Obispo.

ZebWhile in San Luis Obispo, we decided to try out the CardioTrainer app for the Verizon Droid.

As you read in my brother’s story, the rain was coming down heavily.  I put my phone in a zip lock bag so that it would not get wet.  We ran around the city and stopped at select locations in order to take pictures.

Basically, you establish a workout, in this case we selected the running workout.  Music plays throughout the workout.  You can upload your own music, but the music was not to our liking, so we quickly disabled it.

Using GPS, the app records your running route.  Below is a map of our first run using CardioTrainer.

Every time you stop along your path for any longer than 30 seconds, the app automatically pauses.  We stopped several times on our run and the workout resumes on its own once you start running again, although I wasn’t sure about this so I kept manually restarting it.

The biggest problem was that the app did not follow our complete route.  It cut out the 1.1 miles.  This could be due to human error.

One cool thing I just figured out is that if you zoom it it gives you an even more accurate impression of the places you ran.

The workout trainer also gives running statistics, so not including the last part of our run we ran 4.34 miles in 55:16 minutes and burned 594 Calories.  And we ran an additional 1.1 miles that the program did not account for.  Overall, we were running and stopping to take pictures for an hour and 45 minutes, exploring the town of San Luis Obispo.

ZebWhat better place to start training then in my favorite city in the world, San Luis Obispo?  Every summer, I traveled to SLO to either visit my Grandmother or volunteer at the California Scholastic Press Association’s summer journalism workshop, http://cspaworkshop.org/.

I know the city well and love the atmosphere.  A small college town where the locals all seem to know each other.  The area we usually stay is 15 minutes from the beach and the downtown area is full of unique stores and amazing food.

To start our training, we ran around the city, stopping at interesting landmarks along the way.  We will be detailing our route and discussing our adventures in several upcoming articles.

One feature we plan on implementing is developing series, one of these series will be titled Run, Bike, Swim and Discover a City.  Our first city to document is San Luis Obispo.

Do you have any suggestions for our next city?
