ZebWhat better place to start training then in my favorite city in the world, San Luis Obispo?  Every summer, I traveled to SLO to either visit my Grandmother or volunteer at the California Scholastic Press Association’s summer journalism workshop, http://cspaworkshop.org/.

I know the city well and love the atmosphere.  A small college town where the locals all seem to know each other.  The area we usually stay is 15 minutes from the beach and the downtown area is full of unique stores and amazing food.

To start our training, we ran around the city, stopping at interesting landmarks along the way.  We will be detailing our route and discussing our adventures in several upcoming articles.

One feature we plan on implementing is developing series, one of these series will be titled Run, Bike, Swim and Discover a City.  Our first city to document is San Luis Obispo.

Do you have any suggestions for our next city?

  1. Don’t stop, I guess. My favorite city in the world is wherever I happen to be. Does walking burn the same amount of calories as running?

    • Michael, that is a great question. Everything we do burns calories and if our concern is lossing weight (that certainly is one of my goals) then we should pick an activity that burns the most calories in the quickest amount of time or an acitivity that gives us the most enjoyment.

I did some research and found this table. To more specifically answer your question a 205 lbs person would burn 354 calories walking at a brisk pace (3 miles per hour) for one hour or 931 calories running (6 miles per hour) for one hour. If you looking for a quick burn running will burn more calories but if you looking at calorie burn per mile they are actually pretty close (118 calories per mile walking vs. 155 calories per mile running).

If you are looking for a quick burn to get some weight loss what is the quickest calorie burn? According to Nutristradegy.com it would be running at a FAST pace (10.9 MPH) with a calorie burn of 1675 per hour. But lets be honest, not many people can run that fast for that long. How about we look for some other activities that are more convienent and still get a good calorie burn:

Moderate Cycling 745 calories per hour
      Golfing 419 calories per hour
Krav Magra Classes 931 calories per hour
Snow Sking 465 Calories per hour
      Soccer 931 Calories per hour
      Tennis 651 Calories per hour

This research will help me in my weight loss goals and I hope it helps you out. Let us know if you find any other workout activies that you think are a good burn.

  2. I love following this. Keep up the workouts, and you will be surprised what you find!
