ZebI am a Master Procrastinator.  This week, I did not do much in the way of exercise, but I did want to stay true to my New Year’s resolution where I would increase my distance in running, biking and swimming each week, until I was able to do the full Ironman distance for each event.  On Wednesday night, the last day of the week for my training, I was 6 miles short on my running, 14 miles short on my biking and 2.3 miles short on my swimming.

At 11:30 PM, I left for the gym and 4 hours later I was back in bed, having kept my New Years Resolution alive and well.  And, on top of that, I completed the full Ironman distance in the swimming pool.  Actually, a little bit over that, almost 2.5 miles.  It took me one hour to run 6 miles, one hour to bike 14 miles and 1 hour and 53 minutes to complete the 2.5 mile swim, 27 minutes faster then the cut-off time for the Ironman race.

Six miles is the longest I have ran in one attempt, 14 miles is the third longest I have ever biked, and 2.5 miles is the longest I have ever swam in a pool.  I am extremely proud that I stuck to my New Year’s Resolution, but also really impressed about how long I was able to last.  This whole Ironman thing is going to be easier than I thought.

Weekly Amount:

Running = 10.4 miles
Biking = 44 miles
Swimming = 4600 M or 2.9 miles
Total Amount: 57 miles

Overall Amount:

Running = 40 miles (71 miles to San Diego)
Biking = 87 miles (24 miles to San Diego)
Swimming = 17,200 meters or 10.7 miles (26.6 miles to Los Angeles)
Total = 136 miles (106 miles to Las Vegas)

In my interview with Mitch Roberts, he made a suggestion to me and our readers, he said “Go Gluten Free.”  When he suggested this I thought I had gone Gluten-free my whole life, because I thought it was referring to the muscle on my rear-end.  Turns out, Mitch was talking about something else entirely.

Gluten-free is a diet, completely free of Gluten.  Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale.  Mitch said that he did not realize how much Gluten affected him and that by going Gluten free for a time period, he felt much healthier as a result.   He recommended that everyone should try it for at least a week to see how you feel afterwards.  Perhaps later along in the training process I may try to go “Gluten Free” for a week or two.

Mitch, thanks for the advice and enlightening us all about “Going Gluten Free.”

Michael Nunez has joined The Running Brothers team.  Mike has been one of my best friends since High School.  He’s the type of guy who would do anything for you and is quite handy as well.  Today, we completed our first run, a 2.4 mile run around Chino Hills and the guys in pretty good shape.  I still dusted him in our run, but he gave a valiant effort.

Michael runs his own business, Adaptive Flooring, where he installs all types of flooring.  He has been doing flooring for nearly 8 years now, is personable, adaptable and works hard to make sure that his customers are happy.

We are always looking for more people like Mike to add to The Running Brothers Team so if you are interested in exercising with us, don’t be shy, just ask.

Throughout this process of running, and blogging, I knew that I was going to come across new things that I had never encountered before.  In my interview with Mitch Roberts, I came across a new term that was previously unfamiliar to me . . . The Farmers Blow.

In all honesty, I have used this technique before, but did not know that it had a specific name.

If you are unfamiliar, here is a picture . . .

David Beckham Farmers Blow

Yes, Farmers Blow . . . disgusting.  The term refers to plugging up one nostril and blowing out mucus through the other.   Sorry if you planned on eating before reading this, but I had to share my newfound knowledge with you.

ZebI love to view comments made our posts in order to check out other blogs, one such comment sent me to a series of blogs called Sweat365.  I asked one of these blogger, Mitch Roberts, about his affiliation with Sweat365 and how it works.  According to Mitch, Sweat365 is a social networking blog used to log workouts and connect with other athletes.

Mitch typically uses Sweat 365 as a way to log all of his times, but occasionaly includes blog posts.  He has made many friends through Sweat365 and actually has kept in contact with other athletes to help motivate each other.

On his website, mitchr.sweat365.com, Mitch uses several Side Bar Widgets, which can be found on the Dashbord.  He uses Logbook 2 to record the distances for his workouts and a countdown timer set for Cour d’Alene where he plans on completing his next Ironman event.  (Rocky, these look like really cool widgets, we should look into getting some for our page)

Sweat365 looks like a good way to meet others who like to run, bike and swim.  If you plan on running, biking or swimming, it is worth looking into as it’s a community of like-minded individuals who will keep up on their workouts and try to motivate you to keep up on yours.

As discussed previously, we are hoping to build a community of people who want to get outside to run, bike and swim.  We did find two new suckers to join us.  Last week, two great friends of mine, Dusty Miller and Donald Lindsley joined me on a 2.4 mile run and just yesterday, Dusty and I ran 4.5 miles together.  It is great to have such wonderful and active friends.

I also would like to give a special thank you to Dusty Miller.  Almost a year ago, Dusty entered me in my first triathalon event, Race on the Base in Los Alamitos, a sprint triathalon.  Donald, Dusty and I all ran that event together and what an experience.  We had friends and family come to watch our race and it was one of the funnest things that I have done.  So, Dusty, thank you for being such a great friend and forcing me to run, bike and swim.

Unfortunately, Donald’s run may be his first and last with The Running Brothers.  He has headed to New Mexico to finish his degree.  We here at The Running Brothers wish him all the luck in the world.
