Fathers Day is coming up and it’s time again for the running brothers to go on our annual father-son golf trip. This year we are heading up north to the Oxnard area to play at River Ridge Country Club. We are excited to see a new town, play some golf but most of hang out with our Dad.
All my friends thought that my feet had cancer. I ran a marathon a month and a half ago and the remnants of it can still be seen in my feet. I have played soccer my whole life and have always had callouses, but they are worse than they have ever been. Anyone have any remedies for my feet that I could use to make them better again?
Erik is a barefoot runner from Brazil who recently contacted us on Twitter (@erikneves). He said that he had completed an Ironman in Brazil two weeks ago and just finished an Ultramarathon this past weekend. Not only that but he completed the Ultramarathon by doing one half of it barefoot and the other half wearing huaraches. Which got me wondering . . . What the heck is a Huarache?
A Huarache is some kind of Mexican running sandal. I searched several websites and there were a lot of links to different types of Huaraches, but I chose this website because I have a feeling that this is what our friend @erikneves was running in – http://www.invisibleshoe.com/. If you visit this website you will see that these sandals are super thin and supposedly are supposed to give you the experience of barefoot running while still protecting your feet.
I don’t know about you, but I tried running a marathon over a month ago and on a trip to San Juan Capistrano, I was walking around with sandals on and all my friends told me that it looked like my feet had cancer because they were covered in blood blisters from running in a marathon. I could not imagine running in those huaraches, let alone running half of an ultramarathon in them and the other have completely barefoot.
That’s crazy! But, now we know what a huarache is . . . and so do you.
We have been writing on The Running Brothers for 6 months now and I am pretty sure that I have been spelling Triathlon wrong for the entire 6 months. I was writing a post on it and noticed the red spell check line underneath the Triathalon which it never really corrected before. I thought, “That’s weird.” So, I ran to my nearest Dictionary and ripped off the shelf.
Sure enough, I have been writing a blog for 6 months on being a Triathlete and have been spelling Triathalon wrong and no one told me. I’m dissappointed in my heroes out there . . . but, I guess I can’t blame you. Perhaps that’s why we were leading the Google Search rankings for our Triathalons . . . Haha.
The Running Brothers are returning to their roots. We started our running in one of our favorate Cities, San Luis Obispo. You can read our previous running advantures in SLO, all the way back in December.
That was our first real training day and I think we have come alot. Now we are going back for our second triathalon. The 32nd Annnual SLO Triathalon will be on July 24, 2011 and the running brothers will be there ready to run, bike and swim.
You may have read that our family has a pretty close connection to San Luis Obispo. Our mother grew up in SLO, our father attended the California Scholastic Press Association Workshop and subseqently lead for work show for nearly 30 years. Our parents meet at that workshop at the California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. My brother, Sister and I all attended the workshop. Our family made regular trips to SLO to see our family. So needless to say SLO has a special place in our hearts.
If you want to join us let us know, if you want to make the drive or are a local and want to cheer us on that would be fantastic.
WISH US LUCK!!!
What’s better than doing a Sprint Triathlon? Doing a Sprint Triathlon for 30 days straight, that’s what!
My brother and I signed up for the San Luis Obispo Triathlon at the end of July and in order to prepare for it, I have decided to do the full distance of that triathlon every single day for 30 days in order to build up my speed on the course for race day. I will be posting my times for these triathlons from time to time so be sure to follow up on my posts. Check in to see how I am doing from time to time and give me some words of encouragement.
Just for your information, the San Luis Obispo sprint triathlon is a .5 mile swim, a 15.3 mile bike ride and a 3.1 mile run.
The actual date for the SLO Triathlon is on Sunday, July 24. I want to give myself some rest before race day and need to include some black out dates for planned vacations which means that I will start doing these Triathlons next Monday, June 13 2011. Make sure to follow my exploits on Twitter and Facebook.

Music and Ipods have become a huge part of training these days and my brother and I have always tried to find the perfect music or podcasts to listen to on our runs. We post this question to our Twitter followers every once in a while in order to see what other people listen to.
@TheRoad2WD responded with a blog post that he had written for his website, http://road2warriordash.wordpress.com/. His blog post on his Ipod selection can be found here, http://road2warriordash.wordpress.com/2011/03/31/the-road-beyond-warrior-dash-its-not-my-fault-you-hate-your-boyfriend/. It’s quite the collection of music and I would love to generate a comprehensive list of some of the best podcasts and music to listen to while training. Feel free to add music to our list by commenting on our website.
@OrgasmicChef called us buggers! The nerve!!! Wait, what the heck is a “bugger?”
Since starting this website, we have learned so much. We have learned about the “Farmer’s Blow,” “Going Gluten Free,” “The Post Race Blues and the “Chamois” (all of which you can find here, http://runningbrothers.com/category/new-vocabulary/.
Now, I have heard Australian’s or New Zealander’s say “bugger” before, but I never really knew what it meant. So, after calling us “buggers,” which I considered an offensive term, @OrgasmicChef sent us this video explaining the word.
After watching the video, I still have no idea what it means. I think we were called jerks . . . What do you think?
Thanks to @BrittEMeeks for sending us this video.
Britt Meeks told us that we had really big egos and that we thought we were awesome. She said we had big heads and that we should have some perspective and so she sent us this video.
The Running Brothers support our troops completely. We love everything they do for us and while this story is amazing, I must point out a few things to show how our awesomeness is better than this amputee veteran’s awesomeness.
- His teams shirts were not nearly as awesome as ours.
Ok, well, I guess I could only think of one way that we were more awesome than this guy. It’s amazing what human beings can accomplish when we work together. Check out this video to get a glimpse into what life is all about.
