RockySo far, this weekend isn’t quite what I had hoped. I had a lot of plans, which included golfing, a Laker game, Anahiem Ducks skills competition, a soccer game, and birthday gathering. In all of that I still wanted to get my second 4 minute mile attempt in. Unfortunently, my fist trip to Staples center left some of my weekend plans up in the air. The Lakers did win though.

So like my brother, I too, have been making an effort to limit my alcohol consumption. My reasons are slightly different than my brother. I need to get in shape and according to my doctor my liver would like me to get in shape as well. Since July I have limited myself to maybe a dozen beers and at the Laker game I did a few more (not too much) and got home really late (2 pm). Waking up this morning I felt like crap, not a hangover just a generally crappy feeling.

So I did my scheduled activities but I just didn’t feel up to the four minute challenge. I remember when I was younger I used to be able to bounce back from those sorts of things, but I guess my body won’t let me do that any more.

I guess this next week I will have to kick my butt a little harder on these workouts to make up for it.

ZebWhat is a hero? Is it a guy who dresses up in a tight spandex suit who battles evil-doers?  Is it a man distinguished by exceptional courage and strength?  Is it a Greek demi-god?

The word hero has become overused so much so that it has lost it’s meaning entirely.  We want to help bring the word to it’s true fruition, it’s true meaning, it’s true purpose.  The word, “hero” should only be used for a select few, the chosen ones, the righteous.

Therefore, we have reserved this sacred word for those that mean the most to us, “YOU.”  Forever and always, YOU will be our heroes, for YOU help to motivate us, encourage us and inspire us.  YOU are the true heroes.

Be prepared for future installments in our blog where we profile one of our readers and share their experiences to The Running Brother world, which in case YOU haven’t noticed, YOU are now a part of.

Sister to the Running Brothers Hello, I am Lacey Welborn of LaceyW.com and sister to the Running Brothers. I am very proud of my brothers for getting all this going. They’ve set ambitious goals for themselves. They told people they knew about their goals and found they have similar goals. They made the decision to help each other stay on track. Then, they started this blog which, will not only track their progress, but also keep them accountable to work towards the goals they have set. Rocky wants to be a marathoner. Zeb wants to become an Iron Man.

Rocky, my twin, used to run cross country in high school. I think he has a very good understanding of the work that he will have do to get into marathon running shape. He knows it will be difficult, but he also knows just what he needs to do to reach the finish line.

Zeb, on the other hand, has no idea what he’s in for. Sure, he’s always played sports and for a while he was a gym rat, but he hasn’t done much in endurance training. Besides the sprint triathlon he ran last year he’s got nothing under his belt. When he told me he wanted to be an Iron Man I thought once he looked into it he’d leave that idea behind and settle on something else. Needless to say I was wrong.

A couple days ago Zeb told about his swim workout. He wanted to see how long he could swim without stopping. When he told me his results I was surprised. He did really well. Zeb says he knows that he can finish the swimming part of the Iron Man in the appropriate amount of time. Perfectly reasonable, BUT then he told me that he thinks completing this Iron Man is going to be a lot easier than he originally thought.

Wait. What!? Easier? It’s insane! Complete a marathon after biking 112 miles and swimming 2.5 miles… to me, it’s CRAZY!

I’m glad he thinks it won’t be too hard. I have to admire his optimism. I will definitely encourage him, but I know there will be road blocks, and I hope he’ll be ready for them.

ZebI know, I know.  It’s January 7, how can I possibly be writing about my New Year’s Resolution.  I’m a chronic procrastinator.

Hence, you might assume that my New Year’s Resolution would be to stop procrastinating.  You are wrong.  It’s a bunch of other things and here they are in no particular order.

  • Increase my running distance every week, until I am able to run 26 miles without stopping.
  • Increase my biking distance every week, until I am able to bike 112 miles without stopping.
  • Increase my swimming distance every week, until I am able to swim 2.4 miles without stopping.
  • To not drink any alcohol in 2011.

These goals are all measurable.  Every Wednesday I plan on updating my process and every Wednesday for the entire year, I plan to improve my weekly distance for running, biking and swimming for 52 weeks out of the year.  Check on my progress and hold me accountable.  Most people don’t keep their New Year’s Resolution’s, do you think I am most people?  Let’s see how long I can last.

I already posted my distances for the first week of the year, this past Wednesday, so if I am to keep my promise, I will need to swim more than 2.5 miles this week and run more than 9.8 miles.

To put it simply running is just putting one foot in front of the other, over and over and over again. I know people get more out of it and that is what helps to push them to keep working out and maintain their fitness but everyone needs to change it up every once in a while. You can change it up by running with new people or in new places and I need that. So I think I have found an exciting oportunity to change it up and to keep the suspense for my brother I am telling him it is a mystery challenge for him.

So here is the deal for him. Be ready at 5:30AM (I think that is the time he goes to bed) on Febuary 6th, 2011. Here is a short list of things he will need: 1) Running Shoes & 2) Shorts. So be ready for a good work out in a new city,  some soreness and hopefully a good steping stone in our journey.

In the past I think my brother may have made fun of me if I told him what I have planned. I like that my brother is onboard for this fitness stuff, it really helps me in my goals.

One month to get ready!!! We will see if Zeb and I can do it.
