Rocky and I have decided to enter the L.A. Marathon on March 17, 2013.  But, in order to do so we wanted to start eating healthier too.  Because we both know healthy eating and exercise go hand in hand.

High Five Explosion

We both have decided to get on a diet that will help improve our livers and immune system as I have been getting sick more than the average person would and want to make sure I’m being as healthy as possible.  Everything that goes through your body is processed by the liver and the way you eat has a major impact on how you feel.

At least 8 oz. or more of clean filtered (not tap) water is needed every day.  Whole foods, organic food, natural foods, fruits and vegetables are excellent choices.  The brightest colored foods are rich in nutrients, so eat lots of dark greens, oranges, yellows and reds.  These can be apples, artichokes, asparagus, beets, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, garlic, lemons, onions, parsley, squash and soy products.

Small amounts of protein, like low-fat turkey, chicken and fish are essential for the liver.  Whey protein powder is an excellent source of amino acids.

Eat fresh, unprocessed, food as much as possible. Use good oils in smaill amounts like olive oils, fish, nuts, and avocados. Drink herbal and green teas which are full of antioxidants.  Eat small amounts of carbohydrates like potatos, rice and beans.  And do try to eat foods high in fiber.

Some herbs, like milke thistle, can also be used to improve liver function.  Artichoke, Dandelion root, Oregon Grape Root and Turmeric are all considered good for the liver.  Fresh and supplemental garlic, onion and other sulfur foods are also good for the liver.  Never take herbs when using prescription drugs or while pregnant without talking to your doctor first.  Also, stop taking herbs two weeks before any surgery.

What to avoid:

  • Fast Food
  • Alcohol
  • Salt
  • Artificial Sweeteners
  • Monosodium Glutamate
  • High Fat Foods
  • Fried Foods
  • Milk
  • Cheeses
  • Sauces
  • Margarine
  • Hydrogenated Oils
  • Spicy Foods
  • Hot Foods

Establishing a proper diet is important for any training routine.  I think we’ll start with eating natural, organic and whole foods.  Now to figure out how to cook foods using those ingredients.
